Proverbs 24:19 -- On Fretting Not

"Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked;"
Proverbs 24:19

I think this is something we need to be careful of.  It is tempting to look at someone else's life and think... hey, that person isn't playing by the rules, but is still winning.  Why don't I have what that person has?  Or we might start thinking that being righteous is holding us back, somehow ascribing all of their success to not having to play by the rules.  That's a dangerous way to think, because it can lead us to try forbidden things, trying to get more of whatever it is that we want, when the truth is that God is more than willing to give us what we want... the real challenge is schooling our desires so that getting what we want doesn't ruin our lives.

Today, let's try not to fret or be envious, comparing ourselves to others.  Instead, let's focus on self-improvement--on what we can do to become better and improve the lives of others.  As we do so, we grow closer to God and to the Zion ideal, learning to love other people rather than envy or hate them, and find ways to work together rather than compete for the most / best stuff. :)  The winning / losing thing doesn't have to be the way we live.  When we are working with God, we can find ways for everyone to win.
