3 Nephi 18:3-4 -- On The Sacrament

"And when the disciples had come with bread and wine, he took of the bread and brake and blessed it; and he gave unto the disciples and commanded that they should eat.
And when they had eaten and were filled, he commanded that they should give unto the multitude."
3 Nephi 18:3-4

I kind of like the idea that it was kind of like a meal, which it seems is implied by the "filled" part. I don't think that we're going astray from Christ's teachings in the modern day because of it... I think the idea is symbolic and focusing on Christ's sacrifice for us, and committing to do better is the main idea here. It reminds me of Christ feeding crowds of people in the New Testament though, and although providing for the poor is probably one aspect of it (even here in 3 Nephi, these people had been through a lot, and might not have had a lot of food available), I also love the idea of it being a longer ritual, there in the actual presence of Christ.

I don't think we would go through the sacrament as quickly if Christ were physically with us, and maybe that is something to think about... how important the whole idea is, and what he instructs here, and what he asks. We aren't always going to get this much time with the sacrament, but today, perhaps, we can take that time as we read this chapter and commit to follow Christ's example.
