"For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head."
Obadiah 1:15
This is a frequent theme in the scriptures, but always striking: the idea that our own actions will return to us. It could be a blessing or a cursing, but a strong natural consequence for acting the way that we choose to act towards others.
It's a pretty scary thought not just for unbelievers/heathen, but for most of us I think, for even if we are generally good at being nice, it isn't always universally so, and there are cases where we lose our tempers, or there are certain people or groups that annoy us and so they don't get us at our best.
Maybe today is the day to think about and rectify some of that, not only to save ourselves, but because God asks us to love our enemies. We need to be a dose of love and sanity in the world, not more bitterness and poison.
Thankfully God has granted us repentance, and if we sincerely want to change the way that we act and the way we treat others, God will help us, and we won't have to face the actions of who we used to be at the day of the Lord, but rather the actions of who we are. So, let's get out there and be better. :)
