"And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?"
1 Kings 3:7-9
This is Solomon speaking, when the Lord prompted him to ask for something. I think it is a good example of humility and also some wisdom, even before he recieved his blessing, to ask for help with what he was worried about handling in such a responsible position.
The lesson for us I think is to not ask God for extravagant things like winning the lottery or the destruction of our enemies (see verse 11), but to ask for what we really need to be able to handle what we are facing on a daily basis. We aren't kings, but God offers us all blessings if we are willing to do his will, and he tells us to ask for what we need.
Today, let's ask for help in becoming better people, and knowing how to help the people around us. Let's look to God in faith for assistance with the specific things that we are facing, and as we put effort into doing the right things and following God, he will bless us.
