"If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain."
James 1:26
This is a good reminder that we need to be careful about what comes out of our mouths... not just in a temporary way to please a grandparent, but in a long-term really wanting to change who we are sort of a way.
Perhaps it is part of learning to love other people, to be polite and kind. I don't think God is asking us to not have personalities or quirks of speech, but instead he is asking us to be intentional... to choose carefully, to not say anything that we don't mean, to not offend people unneccesarily, and to show love and charity in our speech... basically to match our speech to our hearts, and to show our religion by our words/works, right?
Today, let's make sure that we aren't hypocrites in what we say, but instead match our words to what we believe and to who we want to be.
