1 Timothy 4:7-8

"But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."
1 Timothy 4:7-8

I like the comparing exercising godliness to bodily exercise here, although I think that it probably needs to be pointed out (also for me) that it isn't any less difficult than bodily exercise. Maintaining Godliness in our lives requires practice and real exercise... working at it, not just falling into it. We have to be aware of our faults and working to avoid them, and to improve. We have to obey God, not just always do what we want. :)

And, of course, not disparaging body exercise either. Keeping your body fit and healthy is a good thing that God also approves. Timothy is just saying here that it is more important to be close to God than to look amazing... but both are also okay. :)

Today, let's make sure that we are exercising godliness in our lives... striving to get closer to God and put him first in our lives.
