Mosiah 1:5 -- On Understanding God's Mysteries

"I say unto you, my sons, were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief, and we should have been like unto our brethren, the Lamanites, who know nothing concerning these things, or even do not believe them when they are taught them, because of the traditions of their fathers, which are not correct."
Mosiah 1:5

This is good advice about the importance of the scriptures, and also points out how easy it is to stray from God's path if we don't have a maintenance plan including prayer and scripture study. We don't examine our own traditions enough, and even when we do, we often completely miss the truth because we can't see God's perspective. Prayer and scripture study help us glimpse that perspective, and as we practice those things in our lives, the closer to the Spirit we become, and the more confident we will be in walking God's path. Today, let's take King Benjamin's advice to his sons, and believe in and value the scriptures, and ask God to enlighten our minds as we read, so that we can understand them better.
