Jarom 1:11 -- On Faith in the Future

"Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them."
Jarom 1:11

I like the idea here of thinking of the things that God has promised as though they already are... that's a very faithful form of certainty in the word of God. For us, the event that they were looking forward to has already come, but we can look forward to Christ's Second Coming in the same way. Believing in it as though it was already here. Living the way that we would live in his presence, loving others and helping to care for all those around us. Today, let's live as though God were here with us, trusting that he will solve the big problems and learning to live with and love our fellow beings in a better society. He will come and make all things right. Let's be ready for that, and learn from that feeling of having him close.

Alma 9:26-28 -- On the Second Coming

"And not many days hence the Son of God shall come in his glory; and his glory shall be the glory of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, equity, and truth, full of patience, mercy, and long-suffering, quick to hear the cries of his people and to answer their prayers.
And behold, he cometh to redeem those who will be baptized unto repentance, through faith on his name.
Therefore, prepare ye the way of the Lord, for the time is at hand that all men shall reap a reward of their works, according to that which they have been—if they have been righteous they shall reap the salvation of their souls, according to the power and deliverance of Jesus Christ; and if they have been evil they shall reap the damnation of their souls, according to the power and captivation of the devil."
Alma 9:26-28

I like the list of some of the attributes of Christ, which helps us to understand him more and to know how willing he is to help us. It's also good to remember that he is coming, and that we shouldn't delay our repentance and preparation for that day. Today, let's remember that our choices make the difference between salvation and damnation, and that Christ will help us to change, if we are willing. Let's think about who we want to be, and make some changes that will help us towards salvation.

Alma 5:14 -- On Being Changed By God

"And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?"
Alma 5:14

A good thing to think about today. Are we all-in with God? Is his gospel in all parts of our lives, or is it just a Sunday thing? Let's take our committment a little deeper today. As we do, God's hand will be clearer in our lives, and we will gain spiritual confidence.

D&C 86:5-7 -- On Gathering

"Behold, verily I say unto you, the angels are crying unto the Lord day and night, who are ready and waiting to be sent forth to reap down the fields;
But the Lord saith unto them, pluck not up the tares while the blade is yet tender (for verily your faith is weak), lest you destroy the wheat also.
Therefore, let the wheat and the tares grow together until the harvest is fully ripe; then ye shall first gather out the wheat from among the tares, and after the gathering of the wheat, behold and lo, the tares are bound in bundles, and the field remaineth to be burned"
Doctrine and Covenants 86:5-7

This is obviously about people rather than fields, but less uncomfortable to talk about if we think of it through an analogy. That's one of the things that parables, and fiction in general, is good for. What struck me today though is the "ye shall first gather out the wheat from among the tares" part, which seems to me to be associated with "the gathering of Israel" as discussed in the scriptures and by the prophets, but which I had never really glued together in my mind before. We need to gather so we don't get caught up in destruction that isn't meant for us.

I think gathering is more than just physical shifting though... the spiritual aspect is that we need to gather to God in heart and mind as well, which is what sets up apart more than any physical movement. Today, let's think about this analogy and be the wheat... the good part of the field / world. Let's gather as many as we can and all come before God, determined to do his will and follow his commandments in order to make a difference in this world and find joy in the world to come.

Psalms 9:18-20 -- On Waiting

"For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.
Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight.
Put them in fear, O Lord: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah."
Psalms 9:18-20

Waiting on the Lord can be hard sometimes. We see injustice and evil around us, and we want it to stop. We can have faith that God will stop it, but let's also remember that we are often full of injustice and sometimes even evil. Our hearts and minds are still a long way from God's. This delay of justice, which is an extremely short time on God's eternal timeline, is the time that he has given us to prepare for him. Let's give other people the same grace, and work to focus on the good in others, and help them where we can.

God's justice will come in his time, which is exactly the right time, and it will be swift and powerful, bringing perfect justice and perfect mercy to us all. Let's make sure that we use the preparation time that he has given us, so that we can be ready when he calls.

D&C 84:96-98 -- On the Knowledge of the Lord

"For I, the Almighty, have laid my hands upon the nations, to scourge them for their wickedness.
And plagues shall go forth, and they shall not be taken from the earth until I have completed my work, which shall be cut short in righteousness—
Until all shall know me, who remain, even from the least unto the greatest, and shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, and shall see eye to eye, and shall lift up their voice, and with the voice together sing this new song, saying:"
Doctrine and Covenants 84:96-98

I like the idea of being full of the knowledge of the Lord. And, really, I think that God is the only thing that can fill our emptiness sometimes. We try to fill it with other things, but it's a God-sized hole, and nothing else will work.

I don't really understand the "cut short in righteousness" part, but it sounds promising, as though at some point we all finally get it right, and are rightous together, and God doesn't have to continue the harsher adversities that it sometimes takes to get us to consider Him.

I also love the singing. I didn't include the lyrics to the song in this selection, but they are cool, and just the idea of everything finally being all good, cleansed, and whole... that's amazing. It makes you want to lift your voice in praise, to know that time is coming.

Today, let's learn of God, and fill our lamps with the oil of knowledge and testimony. Let's rejoice in his gospel and his word, and work together under his guidance towards this day of joy and song. :)

Proverbs 10:12 -- On Love, Forgiveness, Repentance, and Happiness

"Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins."
Proverbs 10:12

This makes me think of perspective. If we really love someone then we have a tendency to forgive them, not because we want them to stew in sin and become worse people, or ruin their lives, but because we believe in their ability to overcome their challenges and to improve. We want to support them in finding happiness and joy. People outside that circle of love, we don't necessarily believe in that. We assume they are bad, set in their bad ways.

I think one cool thing here is that God encloses us all in that inner circle... in the arms of his love. He believes in us and knows that we can change for the better and find happiness. Maybe not in the way we are looking for it right now, but he can help us find the way. Today, let's forgive others, working on thinking about everyone with love, and let's also turn to God for help and guidance in repenting and finding our way to righteousness and happiness... because they are indeed the same thing in the end.

Proverbs 5:21-22 -- On The Cords Of Sin

"For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings.
His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins."
Proverbs 5:21-22

God watching us can seem like a very good thing, when we need his help and protection (always), but it seems different when we are wanting to hide our actions from the Lord (impossible). Today, let's work on realizing that God sees every part of us, but that it's okay, because he loves us anyway, and only wants to help us imrprove. Let's try to avoid doing anything that we wouldn't want answered upon our own heads. God loves us, and he can help... with anything. We only need to ask in faith, believing that he will help us, and he will. :)

Psalms 7:14-15 -- On Pits

"Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.
He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made."
Psalms 7:14-15

These verses are about God's anger with the wicked (verse 11), showing that wicked intentions will turn back upon the wicked. ... It doesn't always happen immediately, but is a good thing to remember, especially when we are the ones that are being wicked.

Today, let's avoid digging pits for others to fall into, so that we don't end up in them, but also let's work on loving others enough that we don't want them ending up there either.

D&C 83:6 -- On Caring For Others

"And the storehouse shall be kept by the consecrations of the church; and widows and orphans shall be provided for, as also the poor. Amen."
Doctrine and Covenants 83:6

This is a good reminder that we are required (and it is our privilege) to care for others. Today, let's reach out and lift whoever we can, and also accept help graciously when we are in need. God wants us to be united in love and service, generous, and kind. It isn't always easy to put others first, and the Lord first, over our personal desires, but it's good practice that will help us reach heaven, as we learn to change our hearts. :)

D&C 82:14-16 -- On Building Zion

"For Zion must increase in beauty, and in holiness; her borders must be enlarged; her stakes must be strengthened; yea, verily I say unto you, Zion must arise and put on her beautiful garments.
Therefore, I give unto you this commandment, that ye bind yourselves by this covenant, and it shall be done according to the laws of the Lord.
Behold, here is wisdom also in me for your good."
Doctrine and Covenants 82:14-16

I love the idea of building Zion, and also that it goes hand in hand with what will be good for us. Earlier in the section God says that if we forgive each other, he will also forgive us, which is awesome, but also right in line with this... building Zion is about unity, and strength together... the same thing that forgiveness does, and the same thing that God wants for all of us. We are to learn to love and serve God and one another, and learn to live together in a perfected society, which is what heaven is about, and how we can prepare for it.

Today, let's think about the things that are holding us back from being Zion people, and let's forgive, and repent, and sow goodness everywhere we go. Let's love each other and do good, and hope with all of our hearts as we focus on the good and build up our fellow beings. :)

Helaman 6:17 -- On Setting Our Hearts

"For behold, the Lord had blessed them so long with the riches of the world that they had not been stirred up to anger, to wars, nor to bloodshed; therefore they began to set their hearts upon their riches; yea, they began to seek to get gain that they might be lifted up one above another; therefore they began to commit secret murders, and to rob and to plunder, that they might get gain."
Helaman 6:17

This is one of the sad patterns we see in the Book of Mormon, and it's a pattern that we should be careful of in ourselves as well. During this period the Nephites were doing really well, and actually so were the Lamanites. They weren't at war, but could visit one another freely, so there doesn't even seem to be resentment or underlying hatred. They really were finally one society. And yet the peace and prosperity seemingly brought them to ruin because they invented their own evils and forgot God who had helped them get to this point in the first place.

It's easier for us to see the pattern in a book where we can watch history from a wider perspective, but these are problems that are close to us as well. Today, let's be careful not to set our own hearts upon our riches or seek to be lifted up above others. Let's not take advantage of each other to get gain, but remember the Lord and turn to him for help in staying on his path. Let's set our hearts on the Lord.

Helaman 5:4 -- On Retirement Plans

"And it came to pass that Nephi had become weary because of their iniquity; and he yielded up the judgment-seat, and took it upon him to preach the word of God all the remainder of his days, and his brother Lehi also, all the remainder of his days;"
Helaman 5:4

This struck me today because the idea of retiring to go on a mission sounds like a lot of work. And yet Nephi was weary of being a judge and seeing iniquity and corruption, and preaching the word was better to him than that. I think it is sometimes hard to see why something like that would be an improvement for someone, trading one kind of difficult work for another, but I think it is because God's rewards are better than anything that we get through normal employment, and also just the idea of helping people and being able to be a part of bringing them joy... there isn't anything better than that, as proven by God, who makes us his work. :)

Today, let's step back and think about what we want to spend our effort on, remembering well that the Lord's yoke is easy and his burden light. Let's learn to think of the gospel as a source of joy and remember that the Lord will help us with everything good that we choose to work on. Let's be like Nephi and find ways to improve things and reduce the iniquity that we see in the world, by furthering the Lord's work.

Helaman 4:19 -- On Loss and Refocusing

"Therefore they did abandon their design to obtain the remainder of their lands, for so numerous were the Lamanites that it became impossible for the Nephites to obtain more power over them; therefore Moronihah did employ all his armies in maintaining those parts which he had taken."
Helaman 4:19

Reading this today, I am thinking that sometimes we need to accept loss. Long-term, God will restore anything that really matters to us in eternity, but short-term, sometimes like Moronihah here, we need to focus on maintaining what we have rather than trying to get back something lost. Even in a case like this... cities. Homes for lots of displaced people, enemies in their places.

It is like that sometimes in our lives too. We lose things that are important to us, and that we mourn or miss. Lost homes and jobs and physical health. Lives and even people that we wish we could get back. Accepting the loss doesn't mean that we abandon hope, but it means that we see what is still in front of us, and focus on the good that we can do and the positive things and abundant blessings that we still have.

It's hard... not saying it isn't. Sometimes though, loss can blind us to other good things around us. Things and people that deserve to be noticed and valued. Blessings that we should be thankful for. Today, let's accept and work through loss so that it doesn't blind us to the good around us. Let's work with God to see clearly and to appreciate and love the goodness in our lives.

D&C 81:4-5 -- On the Greatest Good

"And in doing these things thou wilt do the greatest good unto thy fellow beings, and wilt promote the glory of him who is your Lord. Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees."
Doctrine and Covenants 81:4-5

I like that God helped this person to understand how he could do the greatest good. A lot of responsibility, but also cool to have it spelled out like that so you never wonder whther this is the answer, but could fully commit. I think that we can all have that kind of assurance, but it takes time, and patience, and faith, and it often comes slowly as we struggle to learn. :)

Today, let's work on doing great good, and counseling with the Lord about what the possibilities are in that regard. :) Let's lift and strengthen and learn how to be better people as we go.

Corinthians 12:13-15 -- On Oneness

"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
For the body is not one member, but many.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?"
1 Corinthians 12:13-15

I like the idea of everyone having a place and a reason. The context is talking about spiritual gifts, but I think it goes farther than that and hooks into the whole idea of oneness and unity. Like a boty had parts, but is one whole, so is the church, and so is a family, and perhaps with God, so is all of creation. We're not interchangable parts, but unique and valuable, and we all have a place with God as part of his family, and he knows us and loves us individually. I think it is hard to visualize that idea sometimes because as weak humans we don't have many good examples of that kind of Love... but it is the best part of all of the gospel and the plan and eternity... that love that God has for us which makes us belong to him, and each other, and a greater whole.

Today, let's remember that we are all part of God's family, and in this life together, to help each other and to accomplish a lot of good. Let's jump in as the Lord wills, and help each other do great things. :)

D&C 78:6 -- On Earthly and Heavenly Equality

"For if ye are not equal in earthly things ye cannot be equal in obtaining heavenly things;"
Doctrine and Covenants 78:6

This is a really interesting statement, and I think one that merits some serious consideration. If heavenly equality is dependent on earthly equality, that seems to mean that equality is a general principle that we all need to learn, just like love or faith. Today, perhaps we can think about that, and figure out ways to practice equality in our lives... ways to lift others up and ways to be more generous in general, giving to others whenever we can, and not feeling like we are better than anyone else. Let's pray and ask God to help us learn equality, and then put in the work to put it into action and cement it into our souls. :)

Galatians 5:22-23 -- On Lists and Improvement

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23

A good list of some of the fruits of the Spirit, which can help us in several ways. For instance, we can specifically work on some of these things, to help us get closer to the Spirit and commect with God. Also, they are good reminders when we wonder what is going wrong. These can be things that can help us steer back to the correct path, and even help us to identify the Spirit when we are feeling uncertain.

Today, let's think of a good way to use the list on our lives... something that will help us stay on track and grow closer to God. Let's pray about an improvement plan in some of these areas, and God will help us find our way to a better self, and better relationships with others, including God. :)

Jacob 6:11 -- On Repentance

"O then, my beloved brethren, repent ye, and enter in at the strait gate, and continue in the way which is narrow, until ye shall obtain eternal life."
Jacob 6:11

The scriptures emphasize repentance, coming back to it over and over again, reminding us that we need to be sorry for our past actions, do what we can to make up for them, and change into people who wouldn't do it again. It's hard to repent when we just have an intellectual knowledge that we shouldn't do something, but still have that desire. Even then, though, God can help us change our hearts if we are willing, and eventually we can become people who have no more disposition to do evil, but sincerely desire to do good continually.

Today, let's sincerely examine our choices and go farther than just apologizing for our mistakes. Let's take steps to change, and let God in to help us become new people, with broken hearts and contrite spirits, desiring only to be better than we are, rather than to get around the rules or indulge in something that harms our spiritual health.

Mosiah 26:2-3 -- On Unbelief

"They did not believe what had been said concerning the resurrection of the dead, neither did they believe concerning the coming of Christ. And now because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God; and their hearts were hardened."
Mosiah 26:2-3

I've written about these verses many times, but the idea that unbelief gets in the way of understanding hits me every time. It's like the Dunning-Krueger effect, or imposter syndrome. Our own minds are betraying us, and in a sense our whole lives we are living in a fantasy world. The gospel itself tells us that we are both of infinite worth and that we are less than the dust of the earth... and both are true, in different ways, becuase of our dual nature in trying to reconcile our bodies and spirits into one, whole soul.

If we get stuck along the way and we only believe the body... the flesh, the earthly part... then we will lose the ability to understand the spiritual. A similar thing happens on the other hand. If we get too focused on belief only and we never take action, then we never learn the faith necessary to stand up for that belief and fully commit ourselves.

Today, let's work on rending the veil of unbelief. Let's have the imagination and the faith to see beyond the flesh that is part of us, and remember, even a touch, our spiritual selves. We have that pure goodness inside of us, if we can connect to it, and connect to God who can help make us whole. Let's trust him over even the sometimes-darkness of our own minds, and reach for better selves, and a better world.

D&C 76:10 -- On Unimagined Blessings

"For by my Spirit will I enlighten them, and by my power will I make known unto them the secrets of my will—yea, even those things which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor yet entered into the heart of man."
Doctrine and Covenants 76:10

I love God telling us some of what he will give us if we are faithful to him. The part about "nor yet entered into the heart of man" clarifies that he isn't just planning on giving us things we haven't seen or heard of, but that what he has in mind, no one on Earth has ever even *imagined* ... that's awesome stuff right there, and why it is so important to work on breaking down the walls that we have built up between ourselves and God. We have to learn to let him in, to listen to him, and to follow his instructions, so we can get to the places he is showing us... the promised lands, the better selves, the glorified, amazing future that is better than we could ever imagine in this life.

Today, let's try to grasp the concept that nothing on this earth matters as much as what God has in store, and that the most important thing in this life is to do all we can to prepare for that... to get there, and to help others get there too. Once we grasp that, perhaps that will help us to have a better perspective on everything else. The temporary problems and setbacks, and even death, which is also temporary. It helps with temptation and sin as well... giving up that promised future for anything temporary seems ludicrous when we are seeing with the Spirit. Let's work with and for God and lift ourselves and the whole world around us closer to Him.

Mosiah 25:12 -- On Choosing a Name

"And it came to pass that those who were the children of Amulon and his brethren, who had taken to wife the daughters of the Lamanites, were displeased with the conduct of their fathers, and they would no longer be called by the names of their fathers, therefore they took upon themselves the name of Nephi, that they might be called the children of Nephi and be numbered among those who were called Nephites."
Mosiah 25:12

I like this mention, because it resolves the storyline of their fathers in a good way. Their fathers had been Nephites who were wicked priests of King Noah, who fled and left their wives and children behind, and decided to kidnap some Lamanite women instead. Later, when they are discovered by the Lamanites, their wives plead for their lives, so we know that they at least liked them enough to not want them killed, but I mean, obviously still very wrong. It's good to see that their children didn't follow in the ways of their fathers, but instead decided to take a stand together and choose a better name.

Today, perhaps we can take this example to heart, and let go of the past and forge a new and better future for ourselves and our children. Let's choose the family of God, and be his children, and work for the brighter future he has in store for us.

Mosiah 12:26-30 -- On Teaching the Wicked Priests

"I say unto you, wo be unto you for perverting the ways of the Lord! For if ye understand these things ye have not taught them; therefore, ye have perverted the ways of the Lord.
Ye have not applied your hearts to understanding; therefore, ye have not been wise. Therefore, what teach ye this people?
And they said: We teach the law of Moses.
And again he said unto them: If ye teach the law of Moses why do ye not keep it? Why do ye set your hearts upon riches? Why do ye commit whoredoms and spend your strength with harlots, yea, and cause this people to commit sin, that the Lord has cause to send me to prophesy against this people, yea, even a great evil against this people?
Know ye not that I speak the truth? Yea, ye know that I speak the truth; and you ought to tremble before God."
Mosiah 12:26-30

This is the prophet Abinadi, speaking to the wicked priests of king Noah, pointing out here the hypocrisy of the priests teaching a law which they did not obey. Later in the chapter he starts teaching them the ten commandments, the most basic part of that which they claimed to teach.

One of the cool things here is that Alma is one of these priests, and he, alone among all the rest, believes what is being said, and later tries to defend Abinadi and becomes converted to the Lord in truth, making a huge impact on the church at the time, and on Nephite history. God was working his miracles even here, urging his prophet to teach the gospel even in the midst of those who were actively mocking him, and who should already have known these things. But this sermon before he was put to death ends up making a vast difference.

Today, let's remember that we can't always see the wisdom and intentions of God, but he always has a plan, and a reason for what he asks of us. Let's be brave enough to do as God asks, even when it might seem like there is no point. God is working in the background, weaving our contributions into the whole in exactly the right way.

D&C 76:1-4 -- On The Greatness of God

"1 Hear, O ye heavens, and give ear, O earth, and rejoice ye inhabitants thereof, for the Lord is God, and beside him there is no Savior.
Great is his wisdom, marvelous are his ways, and the extent of his doings none can find out.
His purposes fail not, neither are there any who can stay his hand.
From eternity to eternity he is the same, and his years never fail."
Doctrine and Covenants 76:1-4

This is an amazing section, and having this at the start strikes me as sort of a preparation. God talks about things that he will reveal and the different things that we might attain, but the beginning of all of it is this... we have to understand the nature of God, at least as far as we can with our limited mortal understanding, in order to recognize, honor, and love God, and to understand his works. We have to see his motivations and his power to understand his love and gentleness, and to see the great things that he has in store for us.

Today, let's read, study, and learn of God. Let's get to know him so that we can love and understand him and be able to see and know his works, both now all around us, and his plans for us in the future.

Alma 61:9 -- On Liberty

"And now, in your epistle you have censured me, but it mattereth not; I am not angry, but do rejoice in the greatness of your heart. I, Pahoran, do not seek for power, save only to retain my judgment-seat that I may preserve the rights and the liberty of my people. My soul standeth fast in that liberty in the which God hath made us free."
Alma 61:9

I like the idea here that God is the one that grants us freedom and liberty. In context, Pahoran is telling Moroni of a rebellion where a part of the people are trying to set up a king to rule them, and joining in an agreement with the Lamanites to overthrow their whole society. Pahoran is asking Moroni to help him try to stop it. Even though Pahoran is the elected governor of the land, he doesn't get angry at Moroni's complaints, but just tells him what is going on and asks for help.

Today, let's remember humility and the source of our goodness and freedom. Let's be willing to ask for help and to work to bring to pass God's will rather than trying to defend our own pride. :) Let's work with God to support liberty for everyone.

Proverbs 11:24-27 -- On Scattering and Increasing

"There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him."
Proverbs 11:24-27

I like the idea of scattering, yet increasing here... like scattering seeds, and being generous with others. I also like the contrast between good and mischief, which brings to mind things like scamming others or writing ransomware and things like that. God tells us that mischief will come to mischief, just like good will come to good. Now of course that doesn't mean that we can't repent of mischief, or that if we do good that we won't have trials... but overall, as we see throughout the scriptures, when we do good, things go well, and when we tip over into pride and treating others as enemies, or trying to play king of the hill, then things don't go well.

Today, let's work on being generous and good, so that God can bless us, and we will have the Spirit with us to support us in our trials.

D&C 74:7 -- On Little Children

"But little children are holy, being sanctified through the atonement of Jesus Christ; and this is what the scriptures mean."
Doctrine and Covenants 74:7

I love that this is stated, and elsewhere that infant baptism is explained as being unneeded. The idea that small children could be condemned without any chance to make informed choices is a scary one. Today, let's work on becoming as pure and holy as little children are, through our own informed choices. :)

D&C 71:3-6 -- On the Path to Power

"Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you. Wherefore, labor ye in my vineyard. Call upon the inhabitants of the earth, and bear record, and prepare the way for the commandments and revelations which are to come. Now, behold this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also; For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power."
Doctrine and Covenants 71:3-6

It's interesting how different this instruction is compared to ways that we seek worldly power. Gos is there, offering us power, and wisdom, and knowledge. And what he asks is that we listen, learn, and grow... that what he offers us we will actually use, as we develop and become better, and as we have a positive influence on the world around us.

Today, rather than worldly power, let's seek the power that God offers us, working to recieve and use all that he gives us, and preparing the way for more, both in the world and in our own hearts.

D&C 70:14 -- On Temporal Equality

"Nevertheless, in your temporal things you shall be equal, and this not grudgingly, otherwise the abundance of the manifestations of the Spirit shall be withheld."
Doctrine and Covenants 70:14

I like the part that God added in there about "not grudgingly," reminding us that attitude matters. :) Perhaps today we can share with others, not grudgingly, and get closer to the Spirit.

D&C 67:10-14 -- On Jealousy, Fear, and Humility in the Presence of God

"And again, verily I say unto you that it is your privilege, and a promise I give unto you that have been ordained unto this ministry, that inasmuch as you strip yourselves from jealousies and fears, and humble yourselves before me, for ye are not sufficiently humble, the veil shall be rent and you shall see me and know that I am—not with the carnal neither natural mind, but with the spiritual.
For no man has seen God at any time in the flesh, except quickened by the Spirit of God.
Neither can any natural man abide the presence of God, neither after the carnal mind.
Ye are not able to abide the presence of God now, neither the ministering of angels; wherefore, continue in patience until ye are perfected.
Let not your minds turn back; and when ye are worthy, in mine own due time, ye shall see and know that which was conferred upon you by the hands of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun. Amen."
Doctrine and Covenants 67:10-14

This context here is God, explaining to some men why they weren't able to see him in person as the prophet had. The Lord basically says that they need to keep at it, getting the Spirit into their lives, letting go of their fear, and jealousy (specifically of the prophet in this case, but for us, also in general). God is, in essence, saying "well, I would come right now, but it would destroy you."

It's an interesting answer because that's part of the challenge of life. We started as spirits in the presence of God. We came here to get bodies, but we have to train them to be as pure/good as our spirits are... or were before we came here and were "corrupted" by our choices. Normal desires can all be fulfilled in a righteous way, but we have to learn that, and follow Christ's example of walkeing the earth with a body of his own.

Today, let's work on stripping ourselves of jealousies and fears, and on being worthy to literally stand in the presence of God, understanding that God is the difference between joy and misery, and we need his presence in our lives on some level to feel happiness. He is the light and the life, and reaching towards those things is always going to be worthwhile. :) Let's consider that, and work on being "sufficiently humble" amd remembering how much we need his words and his servants in our lives.

Nehemiah 9:3 -- On Reading, Confessing, and Worshipping

"And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God."
Nehemiah 9:3

This is talking about a tradition in the Old Testament, but it reminds me of the sabbath, and makes me wonder how it might help us to set aside time to specifically read and study the scriptures, confess our sins to God, and worship. The idea seems to be learning, changing, and gratitude for all of the above. In the modern day we are still reading scriptures together and fasting together (another part of the tradition), but we leave out the sackcloth and putting earth on ourselves parts, which I think were just outward indicators of humility. Hard to be prideful wearing a sack with dirt on your face. :)

This sabbath, let's commit some serious time to reading, and to confessing. Let's remember our sins and our need for the atonement of Christ in our lives, and do what the Lord prefers on the Lord's day, rather than what we might prefer. Let's be intentional in our worship, both at church and at home, and remember how good the Lord is to us, always. He deserves some adoration. :)

Alma 43:6-7 -- On Preserving Hatred

"And now, as the Amalekites were of a more wicked and murderous disposition than the Lamanites were, in and of themselves, therefore, Zerahemnah appointed chief captains over the Lamanites, and they were all Amalekites and Zoramites.
Now this he did that he might preserve their hatred towards the Nephites, that he might bring them into subjection to the accomplishment of his designs."
Alma 43:6-7

The idea of preserving hatred here is interesting, and scary... in this case they were doing it on purpose, stirring up people to go to war against the Nephites. I wonder if sometimes that we do the same thing. Nurse grudges and hold on to hatred far past the point where it is even serving as an emotional vent. When we do that, we are effectively living with an open wound and not allowing it to heal. Just because the damage is spiritual rather than physical doesn't mean that it doesn't harm us just as much, and perhaps more, and harden our hearts so that we are less open to feeling the spirit of the Lord, and less capable of sincere love and affection for others.

Today, let's learn from this awful example and stop preserving hatred. It's difficult, I know, to get over things where we feel that we have been wronged or cheated or intentionally used. It's hard to learn to love our enemies ... but that is exactly what Christ asks us to do. And this is why. Because it is eating us alive. Let's work on letting it go, and healing our own hearts. Let's learn joy and love rather than hatred and sorrow and resentment. God can help us. Let's ask him.

Alma 41:5-7 -- On Desiring Righteousness and Doing Good

"The one raised to happiness according to his desires of happiness, or good according to his desires of good; and the other to evil according to his desires of evil; for as he has desired to do evil all the day long even so shall he have his reward of evil when the night cometh.
And so it is on the other hand. If he hath repented of his sins, and desired righteousness until the end of his days, even so he shall be rewarded unto righteousness.
These are they that are redeemed of the Lord; yea, these are they that are taken out, that are delivered from that endless night of darkness; and thus they stand or fall; for behold, they are their own judges, whether to do good or do evil."
Alma 41:5-7

The idea of being our own judges is interesting, but also scary, because we know the exact extent of our own effort, rebellion, and sin. It's also cool though because we know that this is what Christ set up for us... the chance to repent, to change, to make these choices about our own lives and have the ability to change and improve as we go. So wherever we are on God's path, we can still walk forward and progress and move towards that eternal goal, even if we feel far behind other people on the path. The comparison doesn't matter... only the fact that we are moving in the correct direction--toward God rather than away from him. And along the way we can help others to see the path more clearly and to enjoy the journey a little more. :)

Today, let's desire righteousness and work with God on improving our lives and doing good.

John 5:39-44 -- On Searching and Seeking Christ

"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
I receive not honour from men.
But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?"
John 5:39-44

I love the advice to search the scriptures, even though I think it was being used ironically here for people who trusted in the scriptures and didn't understand them. So, good advice to search the scriptures and learn about Christ, so that we *can* go to him and have life. So that we can have the love of God in us, and so that we can recieve Christ in our lives. Today, let's seek the honor that comes from God only, rather than earthly honor. Let's remember what truly matters and studiously deconstruct whatever barriers that we have built up in our lives that separate us from God.

Jacob 5:4 -- On Perishing Not

"And it came to pass that the master of the vineyard went forth, and he saw that his olive tree began to decay; and he said: I will prune it, and dig about it, and nourish it, that perhaps it may shoot forth young and tender branches, and it perish not."
Jacob 5:4

I like this analogy of the Lord caring for us, showing that he can see that we aren't doing well, and wanting to do everything he can to save us. Today, let's open ourselves up to the idea of being saved, and let go of our spiritual death wish. :) Let's listen, and learn, and grow in goodness. God wants us to live, and if we are open to that in any degree, he has the power to bring us back to life and save us, even from ourselves. Let's grow, and change, and dedicate ourselves to being good. As we do, he will pull us back, no matter how wilted or corrupt, and restore us and help us, and save us, infusing us with health and life and hope.

3 Nephi 5:1-3 -- On Doubt and Repentance

"And now behold, there was not a living soul among all the people of the Nephites who did doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken; for they knew that it must needs be that they must be fulfilled.
And they knew that it must be expedient that Christ had come, because of the many signs which had been given, according to the words of the prophets; and because of the things which had come to pass already they knew that it must needs be that all things should come to pass according to that which had been spoken.
Therefore they did forsake all their sins, and their abominations, and their whoredoms, and did serve God with all diligence day and night."
3 Nephi 5:1-3

I like how this seems like the obvious outcome. They stopped doubting, so they repented. That seems like the logical thing to do. I think sometimes though we rebel anyway, even though we believe... because we're scared or stressed or selfish, or whatever it is. Today, let's work to supress that rebellous inclination, and let's be humble, and do what is right, so we can be prepared when the Lord comes again.

Alma 38:13-14 -- On Unworthiness and Striving to Improve

"Do not pray as the Zoramites do, for ye have seen that they pray to be heard of men, and to be praised for their wisdom. Do not say: O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren; but rather say: O Lord, forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy—yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times."
Alma 38:13-14

I like this emphasis on humility, remembering that we are always unworthy compared to God, and that we shouldn't be out there seeking praise, but rather seeking forgiveness and the welfare of others. It isn't necessarily easy, of course, because we often crave approval, and want to feel loved and appreciated, so it's hard sometimes to admit our faults and failures. With God though, we can trust that while he sees our flaws, he always still loves us. He can help us grow and improve and become better than we now are. Today, let's trust him with our unworthiness and insecurities, and ask him for help... he wants to help us, and he loves us and appreciates our efforts to improve, and will bless us as we strive to walk his path. :)

Alma 38:5 -- On Trust and Deliverance

"And now my son, Shiblon, I would that ye should remember, that as much as ye shall put your trust in God even so much ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions, and ye shall be lifted up at the last day."
Alma 38:5

Verse one of this chapter repeats a recurring promise "inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall prosper in the land," but this verse goes even farther, promising Shiblon (and us) that as we put our trust in God we will be delivered. The timing still belongs to the Lord, and often requires patience and faith, but God does indeed promise deliverance, which is amazing by itself, but also trials, troubles, and afflictions seems to cover everything, including trouble that we get ourselves into, which seems like an extra helping of mercy and love.

Today, let's trust in God. I think that kind of trust needs our commitment of obedience and faith as well... it's trusting all of it... God's wisdom, advice, and plans for not only our personal happiness, but that of the world at large. We have to trust in God as he is, not just a small facet of his personality. As we learn to trust, "even so much" we will be delivered, not just from a single earthly trial (although that is part of it), but also from our weaknesses, our inability, our failure, and our sin. If we trust God to make us perfect, he will match our trust and we will see miracles of progress in our lives. Deliverance won't be overnight, and it won't be easy, but it can and will happen if we can believe and trust and we are willing to do as God asks. He can give us the strength, but we have to believe in that goal, and be willing to work for it.

Moses 3:3-5 -- On Spiritual and Physical

"And I, God, blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it I had rested from all my work which I, God, had created and made.
And now, behold, I say unto you, that these are the generations of the heaven and of the earth, when they were created, in the day that I, the Lord God, made the heaven and the earth,
And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. For I, the Lord God, created all things, of which I have spoken, spiritually, before they were naturally upon the face of the earth. For I, the Lord God, had not caused it to rain upon the face of the earth. And I, the Lord God, had created all the children of men; and not yet a man to till the ground; for in heaven created I them; and there was not yet flesh upon the earth, neither in the water, neither in the air;"
Moses 3:3-5

I like this version of the creation story, explaining that everything was created spiritually ahead of time. Which seems to me to be saying that everything has a spirit then, right? A spiritual part and a physical part, with the spiritual being the perfect pattern, and the physical the implementation in a corruptible world where sometimes the reality doesn't always match the ideal, but the spiritual part isn't diminished by that temporary plunge into reality, and will reassert itself in the resurrection when the corruptible becomes perfect and incorruptible.

Today let's remember that God can save us from anything, even our own mistakes, because he knows the perfect side of us. He can help us repent and learn to become more like our best selves. :) Let's take him up on his offer and look unto him in all that we do.

Abraham 5:7 -- On Dust, Spirit, and Soul

"And the Gods formed man from the dust of the ground, and took his spirit (that is, the man’s spirit), and put it into him; and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul."
Abraham 5:7

I like the clarification here that it was that particular man's spirit... that this was making him into something more than a spirit, but that he had a spirit already, which matches what we learn elsewhere in the scriptures, that there was a pre-existence, where we all existed as spirits before this earth life. I love that idea I think because it makes me feel connected in some way to my former self, even though I can't remember, and makes me want to try to be true to what she wanted, and what she knew she could handle going in. This new version of me is often uncertain, but that me... she must have been confident and ready if she jumped into this. So that has to be in me somewhere... just need to tap into it. :)

Today, let's be thankful for the opportunities that God has given us to grow beyond who we have been, and learn to become more like he is. Let's be glad to breathe and to be filled with life, to have bodies, and the potential for greater joy and happiness. Let's look unto God for help when we need it, and a reminder of who we are and the great potential that he sees in us.

Abraham 3:19 -- On Explanations and Opportunities

"And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all."
Abraham 3:19

I love reading some of these conversations between God and Abraham, because the sense of kind of "dumbing it down for a 5-year-old" comes through. Now, don't freak out... I know that Abraham was not dumb, and God isn't treating him disrespectfully. It's just that there is a little bit of that in every interaction that we have with God, because he knows so much more than we do, and *is* more intelligent by at least several orders of magnitude, and yet he is also more compassionate and wise and truly loves us all better than we can even imagine love as well. He isn't being cruel here... only helping his child to understand, which we all need sometimes.

I love the simple comparison, and explaining to Abraham in a easy way what being a God is, before there were superhero comics and Greek mythologies to fall back on (which of course muddied the waters further, but I digress). Today, let's remember how intelligent and cool God is, as he reaches down to lift us up and help us to learn to be like him. It is the greatest gift we could ever have, to have that opportunity to learn to be so much more than we now are. Let's embrace that chance, follow God's path, and learn for all we're worth. :)

Alma 37:34 -- On Good Works and Humility

"Teach them to never be weary of good works, but to be meek and lowly in heart; for such shall find rest to their souls."
Alma 37:34

Some great advice, which goes along with the admonition a few verses later to "counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good" (verse 37). As we persist in doing good, humbly, always including the Lord, great things will happen, and we will find not only rest, but miracles in our lives in the way that we are transformed and are able to help others through the Spirit.

Jarom 1:11-12 -- On Reminders

"Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them.
And it came to pass that by so doing they kept them from being destroyed upon the face of the land; for they did prick their hearts with the word, continually stirring them up unto repentance."
Jarom 1:11-12

I really like the idea here of the heart-pricking, a reminder of the things that matter that kept people on track. I feel like we can do the same in our lives. That's part of why we attend church, take the sacrament, or go to the temple. It is part of why we pray and read our scriptures as well, although there are other things that we can do. We can remind ourselves of a great story in the scriptures through art. We can listen to music that helps us remember God. We can read or listen to the words of modern prophets speaking at general conference. We can write in our journals about spiritual experiences in our lives.

Today, let's be thoughtful and creative and find ways to prick our own hearts with reminders, so that we can have the same blessings and be stirred unto repentance and faithfulness to God.

Jarom 1:9 -- On Prospering through Keeping the Commandments

"And thus being prepared to meet the Lamanites, they did not prosper against us. But the word of the Lord was verified, which he spake unto our fathers, saying that: Inasmuch as ye will keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land."
Jarom 1:9

I like the idea here that the Nephites were preserved physically, in a war, because they kept the commandments of God. We run up against a lot of challenges in our lives, with various and often complicated causes, some of which don't seem solvable... but as in this war, there was still something that they could do to prepare themselves beyond physical preparations.

Today, let's take a lesson from the scriptures and attempt the same solution for anything we run up against. We can "try the virtue of the word of God" (Alma 31:5). If keeping the commandments will help us to prosper, then it could apply not only in war, but to anything that is impeding our progress. And even if the solution is a bit more complex, obedience to God is a good first step anyway, because it invites the Spirit into our lives, and helps us prepare to petition the Lord to intervene and help us further.

1 Nephi 3:6 -- On Murmuring and Rebellion

"Therefore go, my son, and thou shalt be favored of the Lord, because thou hast not murmured."
1 Nephi 3:6

I think it is hard not to murmur sometimes when we're going through something difficult, so this is really good to remember... and also how Laman and Lemuel ended up. Even if the murmuring starts out minor, if we start feeding that rebellious attitude then we can end up off the path entirely, which is not good. God is the way.

Today, let's work on our attitude problems. :) rebellion is good sometimes, against injustice and falsehood, etc. But God is none of those evil things. Let's do our best to listen to and learn from him in meekness and with an open mind.

Alma 32:21 -- On Faith and Hope

"And now as I said concerning faith--faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true."
Alma 32:21

Another good thing to remember. We often want that sure knowledge, but part of the challenge (and reward) of this life is learning to understand and trust our spiritual senses that lead us to God, and to make choices based on that spiritual information, even when we don't have sure knowledge. As we learn to hone those senses, we can learn more and more about God and be able to communicate with him more easily, and more confidently, but the first step is to act on our hope... to have faith to move forward even when we are uncertain. The value of that lesson is huge, and helps us to not be paralyzed by indecision and fear, but to trust in the light that we have, and know that God will give us more light as we step forward, working for his plan and for the good of all.

Alma 32:12-13 -- On Lowliness of Heart

"I say unto you, it is well that ye are cast out of your synagogues, that ye may be humble, and that ye may learn wisdom; for it is necessary that ye should learn wisdom; for it is because that ye are cast out, that ye are despised of your brethren because of your exceeding poverty, that ye are brought to a lowliness of heart; for ye are necessarily brought to be humble.
And now, because ye are compelled to be humble blessed are ye; for a man sometimes, if he is compelled to be humble, seeketh repentance; and now surely, whosoever repenteth shall find mercy; and he that findeth mercy and endureth to the end the same shall be saved."
Alma 32:12-13

This is good to keep in mind. I think that we all have things in our lives that "compel us" to be humble, and remembering what an advantage that is to having an open heart and being able to connect with God might help us to weather those times with less resentment or pain. Life isn't always exactly what we want, but it is always what we need to learn from, so today let's be grateful for the trials that help us to learn, and let's learn as quickly as possible, so we can hopefully move on to a less painful lesson. :)

Matthew 16:24 -- On Self-Denial and Following Christ

"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
Matthew 16:24

Christ said this during a conversation with Peter and the other disciples, when Peter expressed a sense of denial at the information that Christ would have to die. From that context, it seems that denying ourselves is not disowning or demeaning ourselves, but rather denying the flesh in favor of the spirit, and denying our own preferences and desires in favor of God's will. That is what Christ taught us.

The idea of taking up our cross is also related to the atonement and the suffering that Christ went through. We need to bear the burdens of this world for a time, with God's help, as we learn and gain the experience this world offers us in learning to unite the different parts of ourselves, to take action according to our belief, and also learn love and compassion and to change our hearts as God teaches us, so that our wills beome united with his.

Today, let's work on denying ourselves in favor of God, caring for the people around us rather than induging in selfishness, and let's bear the burdens that God gives us, knowing that even our trials are for a reason. Let's learn, and grow, and follow Christ.

Romans 5:7-8 -- On Dying For Sinners

"For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:7-8

I like the idea here of Christ saving us even though there was nothing in it for him, at least in terms of getting gain or power or position or powerful allies... reasons that people in the world might have for such action. It wasn't for him, but for us, to give us a chance to change and do better. Kind of the opposite of modern media where the hero in the movie dies to protect the innocent or the good... he died for us, when we were neither innocent nor good.

Today, let's remember Christ's love for us, and his willingness to suffer for our sakes, to give us a chance at a better world, and a better self. Let's honor that sacrifice and love, and work with God as he supports and helps us to change for the better.

D&C 59:4 -- On Crowns

"And they shall also be crowned with blessings from above, yea, and with commandments not a few, and with revelations in their time—they that are faithful and diligent before me."
Doctrine and Covenants 59:4

Crowned with blessings seems awesome and like a reward to aspire to, but as we continue, being crowned with commandments and revelations make the idea a lot more complex. I think also amazingly cool, but in a different way. We have to realize that more commandments means more trust and more potential... kind of like sidequests, perhaps. A chance to do more good, and earn more skills on our way to wherever the Lord is leading us. And revelations are the hints along the way, that helps us know where to go next, and how to help, and glimpse the joy that is coming (and allow us to feel it along the way, even in the midst of trials).

Today, let's embrace all that God offers us, knowing that all of it works together for our good and the good of the people around us. God is leading us to hope and love and joy and eternal life in a place better than we could ever imagine in this life. Let's be faithful and diligent and do all the sidequests and read all the documentation, and get the most out of the wonderful lives that God has blessed us with. :) As we do, we'll be crowned with the glory of God that he wants all of us to have. :)

Jacob 7:23 -- On Searching the Scriptures

"And it came to pass that peace and the love of God was restored again among the people; and they searched the scriptures, and hearkened no more to the words of this wicked man."
Jacob 7:23

I kind of like this verse out of context of the surrounding story, because it helps to point out that searching the scriptures and listening to God are sources of peace and love, and maybe we need that lesson repeated sometimes... searching the scriptures is a great default answer for a lot of things in life, and an important source of the word of God.

Today, when we have questions, instead of Googling or phoning a friend, let's take a few minutes to think about what God's answers are. The answers in the scriptures might not adapt to every single question on earth, but they can probably solve most of them, and the ones that scriptues can't solve, prayer (and patience) can. Let's remember to look to God, which will help us find life and peace and love, and everything good.

1 Corinthians 8:1-3 -- On Knowledge and Love

"Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
But if any man love God, the same is known of him."
1 Corinthians 8:1-3

The difference between knowledge and love is interesting here. Knowledge often makes us feel extra competent, but no matter how impressive our knowledge in whatever area, it doesn't come close to touching what God knows. Therefore, our knowledge shouldn't be a source of pride, but rather gratefulness and humility, as we use the knowledge that God has granted us for good, but remain open and teachable, realizing that we are not experts, but rather students, always with a lot more to learn.

Interestingly, love/charity here is a source of edification, and something that helps us connect to God, making it the more important virtue. Today, let's work on loving God and the people around us. I suspect that we will learn much more through that quest than we ever could seeking knowledge alone.

Ether 4:4-7 -- On Revelation to Come

"Behold, I have written upon these plates the very things which the brother of Jared saw; and there never were greater things made manifest than those which were made manifest unto the brother of Jared.
Wherefore the Lord hath commanded me to write them; and I have written them. And he commanded me that I should seal them up; and he also hath commanded that I should seal up the interpretation thereof; wherefore I have sealed up the interpreters, according to the commandment of the Lord.
For the Lord said unto me: They shall not go forth unto the Gentiles until the day that they shall repent of their iniquity, and become clean before the Lord.
And in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me, then will I manifest unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are."
Ether 4:4-7

What strikes me about these verses today is how much there is ahead of us. Sometimes we look around ourselves at the world and we see the bad parts and we think that there is so much evil and the world is ripe to be destroyed, and so we wait for the end rather than focusing on the good we might be able to do to help make things better.

And some things are super bad, given. There is evil, and it is just as bold as it was in the Book of Mormon with the Gadianton Robbers. But there is also good, and things like this to look forward to... unfulfilled, awesome prophecy, and hope in God's promises to all of us. There are promised lands and eternal glories awaiting all of us, if we stick with his plan of happiness.

Today, let's look for the good. Let's look to God and his light for hope in a world of turmoil, and let's lay our foundation upon the rock of Christ, so that we can help build a solid place that others can latch onto as well, spreading peace and goodness and God's love to all that will hear. Let's be the stability and the good in the world, through our connection to God, and prepare for future revelation and good things to come.

D&C 58:3 -- On God's Design

"Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation."
Doctrine and Covenants 58:3

I like the idea here that there is a grand design, which I think we often forget. God knows the end from the beginning. He knows what is to come, and he has prepared for it. Even our poor choices, even today, now, where we are. It is all part of the pattern. All things work together for good, and as we work with God's design, we will be able to find the good all through the weaving of life, and be able to see miracles, and to see our prayers answered with great blessings.

Tribulations will come. Storms and darkness come whether we are sheltered or not, but if we hold fast to God's word and continue in prayer, we will be able to weather any storm, and find shelter and strength in God, in whatever circumstance. Today, let's remember that there is a design... a beautiful, divine pattern that is leading us home, and trust that it will bring us to glory in the end. Let's endure and never give up, as we walk in the secure path of God, despite the storms and the tribulations.

Alma 12:13-14 -- On Words

"Then if our hearts have been hardened, yea, if we have hardened our hearts against the word, insomuch that it has not been found in us, then will our state be awful, for then we shall be condemned.
For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence."
Alma 12:13-14

These verses are talking about the negative consequences of hardening our hearts against the word of Christ... basically what will happen if we ignore Christ's gospel and try to stamp it out of our lives. Not a pretty picture. I chose this verse today though because of what it implies as the opposite, because it shows us the way in looking at it from the other side.

If our hearts are not hardened, and God's word is found in us, then will our state be glorious. :) For our words will reflect his light, and lift us up. Our works will show our goodness. We will be found spotless, through Christ. Our thoughts will be found pure, and in this glorious state, we will rejoice to look up to our God. We will be joyful and grateful and humbled to be in his presence.

Today, let's soften our hearts and study his word, so that it may be found in us, and let's share that word and lift others up with our words and our works, and show God's goodness through our goodness to others. Let's be his true disciples, doing as he would do, lifting as he would lift. As we do, God's word will be found in us, and his light will shine through us, allowing us to do his will, help others, and to learn more of him and draw closer to him, until the perfect day. :)

Helaman 5:12 -- On Building

"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."
Helaman 5:12

What strikes me today about this verse is the theme of building. Often, when God gives us a goal, like a promised land, or Zion, or a better future, instead of just teleporting us directly there, we need to build something... like an ark, or barges, or building up a people, or a city, or flocks, or talents. And even when we get to our promised land or we make it through the flood or the wilderness or the 7 years of labor, or we get a whole kingdom, it isn't just a nice package done up with a bow that we can open and enjoy. Instead, we have to work at it, create something that wasn't there before.

That's true of the foundation that is offered here. We have to build our foundation in Christ, and if we do, we "cannot fall" ... which is an amazing, awesome promise. But the building part isn't just figurative. We actually have to make an effort here, and build. We have to do more than believe. We need to act on that belief, and in that faith--action based on belief--we need to build our testimonies by reading the scriptures, praying, fasting, attending church, and being obedient to the word of God that we learn, test, and then incorporate into our lives. It's the same idea as the oil that the 10 virgins collect in the parable. Our physical *and* spiritual effort is needed if we want to be prepared, and if we want that sure foundation.

Today, let's work on our foundations, anchored in Christ, built immovably on that center rock with focus and faith. As we do, God will bless our efforts and we will learn to be not only strong and solid, but prepared to face whatever comes, with God's strength and protection.

Alma 7:15 -- On Repentance and Covenanting with the Lord

"Yea, I say unto you come and fear not, and lay aside every sin, which easily doth beset you, which doth bind you down to destruction, yea, come and go forth, and show unto your God that ye are willing to repent of your sins and enter into a covenant with him to keep his commandments, and witness it unto him this day by going into the waters of baptism."
Alma 7:15

I like the idea, first of all, that we should not fear when we approach God, even when we have sinned and need to repent. I think the parable of the prodigal son might help to understand that idea... God isn't necessarily happy that we went astray in the first place, but he is overjoyed when we return, and will do all he can to help us.

The idea that our sins are binding us to destruction is kind of scary, but very true, and something I think we need to realize. When we sin we are tearing ourselves apart (in addition to damage done to other people and relationsips), literally killing ourselves spiritually and tying ourselves to Satan's will, which is not a pretty or comfortable place to be, and whether we realize it or not, it causes us to need God even more desperately, for help to get us out of the hole that we have dug for ourselves.

Today, let's repent and stop tying ourselves to the anvil of evil that drags us down. Let's start the change by praying for help and covenanting with God that we will do better and keep his commandments. If we're not baptized, then let's formalize that committment by doing so... and if we are, let's repent and pray, and take the sacrament to renew those covenants. Whether baptized or not, we can turn over a new leaf and do better, with God's help. And the more we practice doing good, the easier it will become, and the more the spiritual harm that we have done to ourselves will heal.

Alma 6:6 -- On Fasting and Prayer

"Nevertheless the children of God were commanded that they should gather themselves together oft, and join in fasting and mighty prayer in behalf of the welfare of the souls of those who knew not God."
Alma 6:6

Praying for others, and praying for others who don't know God, both seem like important things to do, since that is the work of the Lord, and helping him bring people to that entrance door where they can recognize God's Spirit in their lives and learn to make covenants with God to start them on his path of happiness, that's the ultra-important work of salvation, that we can help with.

Fasting is something that we frequently leave out of the equation, and I think that it is an important thing to add, not only to increase the efficacy of our prayers, but to help us as well. Fasting is something that helps us focus, putting our "fleshly lusts" (the desires of the body) in the background so that we can focus on and pull our spiritual selves to the forefront.

That doesn't mean that we need to go on a hunger strike or do anything dramatic that will harm our health, but fasting for 24 hours once a month as we are asked to do on fast Sunday (typically the first Sunday of the month) is something that can help us prioritize spiritual desires over worldly desires, and make our prayers more focused and heartfelt, and when we have something important to pray for, fasting and focusing on it with God and dedicating that time and attention to our prayers for a period of time can help us to break through that barrier of self-focus that we often find between ourselves and God.

Today, let's work on fasting and prayer, and joining together with others to pray for God's work to be done. Let's help others to find God, and pray to know God better ourselves as well.

1 Peter 3:3-4 -- On Outward and Inward Adornments

"Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price."
1 Peter 3:3-4

I like the idea here that we should adorn ourselves with the way we behave rather than by how we dress or groom ourselves. It is another flesh versus spirit idea... not that we shouldn't be clean and well-groomed of course, but that the important thing, the thing that we should prioritize, is the internal / spiritual beauty of being meek and quiet ... under control, calm, happy, joyful. We can show people that God helps us to be happy, and to control our anxiety and cope with the things around us, as we have confidence and faith in him, and his ability to teach us and help us. Which is better overall than just showing off our cool clothing or our wealth. :)

Today, let's focus on displaying our hearts and spirits--our gifts from God rather than our cool stuff. :) Let's set a better example, and work on being welcoming and inclusive rather than using clothing or wealth to separate ourselves from others.

Alma 5:48-51 -- On Atonement and Repentance

"I say unto you, that I know of myself that whatsoever I shall say unto you, concerning that which is to come, is true; and I say unto you, that I know that Jesus Christ shall come, yea, the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, and mercy, and truth. And behold, it is he that cometh to take away the sins of the world, yea, the sins of every man who steadfastly believeth on his name.
And now I say unto you that this is the order after which I am called, yea, to preach unto my beloved brethren, yea, and every one that dwelleth in the land; yea, to preach unto all, both old and young, both bond and free; yea, I say unto you the aged, and also the middle aged, and the rising generation; yea, to cry unto them that they must repent and be born again.
Yea, thus saith the Spirit: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, for the kingdom of heaven is soon at hand; yea, the Son of God cometh in his glory, in his might, majesty, power, and dominion. Yea, my beloved brethren, I say unto you, that the Spirit saith: Behold the glory of the King of all the earth; and also the King of heaven shall very soon shine forth among all the children of men.
And also the Spirit saith unto me, yea, crieth unto me with a mighty voice, saying: Go forth and say unto this people—Repent, for except ye repent ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of heaven."
Alma 5:48-51

Lots of cool things here. I love the atonement of course. Jesus Christ taking away our sins is the single most impactful event in the history of the world, and repentance is the way that we access that gift... belief in it, of course, but also action, because to be cleansed from sin we need to change ourselves, step by step over time, to people who aren't wishing every moment to repeat that same sin. We have to let go of those desires and be willing to give them up to be free of them, and God's plan not only gives us the time and space to get there, but Christ's atonement enables us to be free of our past mistakes. As we are able to change (with support and strength and assistance from God), we are also cleansed, because Christ is willing to take on the burden of our past sins to allow us to walk free as better people now. If we believe in that gift and accept it into our lives by acting on it and being willing to change and let go of the old and start anew through God, he frees us from the pain of the past and leads us to a better place of joy.

I also really love the idea of Christ as King of all the earth. No mere mortal could be trusted with that power, but Christ, the only perfect being to live on the earth, who suffered and died for us, and who understands us better than we understand ourselves... a man and God of infinite love and compassion and strength and beauty and power and pure goodness? Yeah, I'll take it. :) He only is worthy, and he can bring justice, mercy, and perfect joy and peace to this crazy place. I would wish for it to happen today, only I know that I, and we, need some more time to work on ourselves and find our way to his path. His timing will be perfect, and I look forward to it.

Today, let's pray and be grateful for the gift of Jesus Christ, for the chance we have to live and learn and love, and let's repent and do better, walking the Lord's path of joy.

Alma 5:39-40 -- On Choices and Folds

"And now if ye are not the sheep of the good shepherd, of what fold are ye? Behold, I say unto you, that the devil is your shepherd, and ye are of his fold; and now, who can deny this? Behold, I say unto you, whosoever denieth this is a liar and a child of the devil.
For I say unto you that whatsoever is good cometh from God, and whatsoever is evil cometh from the devil."
Alma 5:39-40

I like the simplicity of this... and it *is* simple in many cases, although we often complicate it in our minds thinking that we have other choices, like sitting on the fence or going off on our own. The truth though is that if we are walking away from God, we are always walking towards the devil.

Of course sometimes the choices are between good and good, and we still have to make choices, with God's help to choose what is the correct choice between good choices, like choosing a job or a house, etc. Even then, though, staying close to God and feeling his Spirit in our lives is the best way to be sure that we are choosing wisely.

Today, let's be part of God's fold, remembering that he is the source of all good, and remembering to seek his help in all that we do. As we pray and study and learn of him, and choose to put him first, we will learn more about ourselves and the choices that will lead us closer to God and closer to our best selves.

Alma 5:27 -- On Humility and Redemption

"Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?"
Alma 5:27

This is a sort of scary question to ask yourself, but maybe a good one, as long as it motivates rather than overwhelms. God doesn't want us to give up hope, for sure, but I think he does want us to feel that desire to be better, to do better, and to want to be the type of person that isn't ashamed to come before God. And as we pray and work with God to improve, we can learn that desire and have confidence that we're on the same page with God. Not that we're perfect, but that we are working with God to improve and do better, which is the point... and working with God means at least that we are humble enough to listen to him, and to follow him, which I think is the point of the verse.

Today, let's work on walking God's path in humility and cleanliness, and trust in Christ to help us to have the hope and faith to improve. :)

1 Peter 2:11 -- On War Against the Soul

"Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;"
1 Peter 2:11

The idea of warring againt the soul is kind of scary, along with the idea that we could allow the flesh to win over the spirit by making unwise choices. That seems so opposite of God's hopes for us in this life, where our spirits were granted the opportunity to acquire a body. Allowing ourselves to slip the other way is almost like one of those werewolf stories where the person forgets themselves and goes all wolf... all instinct, no rationality.

Bodies are such amazing gifts from God, and the potential source of much joy, but our Spirits are the core of who we are. Let's not lose ourselves by letting our flesh rule us, losing God and ourselves in the process.

1 Peter 1:22 -- On Purified Souls and Fervent Love

"Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:"
1 Peter 1:22

I like the idea that we purify our souls with truth, by following it. That was dishonesty, or untruth, equals corruption, and harming our souls, and that seems about right, not only in our personal efforts to be honest, but in this world where the truth is so often twisted into deceptive shapes to push some corrupt agenda rather than being plain and precious, encouraging us to do good and rejoice in truth.

To be able to love one another in truth and goodness, we need some extra dedication and fervency so that we can overcome the twisty deceptions and half-truths all around us, and see each other as brothers and sisters and worthy of love and filled with the potential for good.

God is light, love, and truth, and through him we can banish darkness, hatred, and deception. Today, let us love each other fervently, and pray that God's light will help us see through the darkness and show the truth, and when we see it, let us cling to it and to God, through all the mists of darkness, as we gather in God's love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 -- On Doing Good and Not Being Easily Provoked

"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;"
1 Corinthians 13:4-5

What struck me today is the "not easily provoked" part of love. That's hard sometimes, especially with people who know exactly how to push your buttons, but God can help us to perhaps have fewer buttons, or to be able to take a step back and make sure we are seeing things from the other person's perspective and not misinterpreting a sincere message.

I also kind of like that it says "easily" provoked. God isn't asking us to never stand up for ourselves or ignore it when wrongs need to be righted and we can legitimately do something about it, but he is asking us to chill a little and stop allowing little things to get in the way of doing good. Today, let's work on not being easily provoked, and with God's help, keeping our cool, and moving forward, loving and doing good to everyone.

James 5:7-8 -- On Patience and Stablishing Our Hearts

"Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh."
James 5:7-8

I like the comparison here for waiting for a harvest or through a growing season. It helps me understand a little why waiting is necessary sometimes, and perhaps we also have growing seasons in our lives where we learn a lot, and then take some time to recover nutrients before growing something new. We definitely need a lot of time to learn the lessons that God is trying to teach us as gently and lovingly as possible, and the more patience we have to study and learn perhaps the softer those lessons can be, whereas if we harden our hearts and resist, it takes something a little more harsh to break through the soil.

Today, let's remember patience in our lives as we learn and grow, and also as we wait for blessings, and for the coming of the Lord. Let's remember that everything won't be right or perfect now, but as we trust God and have confidence in his happy ending, and "stablish" our hearts to live as though God were present in our lives, he will be, and that time will come, where all things will be made right and we will be welcomed in to more joy than we can imagine... if we can just be patient and have faith for a little longer, until the season and the end. :)

James 4:8 -- On Double-Mindedness and Drawing Nigh

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."
James 4:8

This sounds like a rebuke, and so it is, but I think also some great advice. It can be hard to cleanse our hands and purify our hearts, and part of that is thinking that God should come close to us without us having to do anything... without asking, without seeking, and without any actual effort on our parts. The scary thing is that it is never God that has moved. It is always ourselves that have drifted away from him, forgetting to pray, or study, or make the effort to know Him.

Today, let's cleanse our hands and work on purifying our hearts. Let's seek God, and put forth the effort to draw near to God, and as we do, He will be there when we seek him sincerely. Let's stay focused on him and not let other things cloud our way.

James 3:2 -- On Bridling Ourselves

"For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body."
James 3:2

This is kind of cool, telling us that if we are able to control what we say that we should be able to control the rest of ourselves too... and that, at least in that thing, we're perfect. So, it sounds like a super good and important thing to work on. :)

Avoiding offense in the things that we say doesn't mean that we can't express opinions or correct errors... we still need to do what we can at work/school and at home to improve things, but maybe "bridling" means that we can improve the way that we express our opinions and correct situations so that it is clear that we aren't angry and are only working in the service of all... and if we aren't, then maybe we need to wait a bit and calm down until we *can* be in that mindset.

We can watch our language to make sure it is positive and uplifting, and be gentler to others and listen to the Spirit more, which can help us know what to say and how to say it. God is always willing to teach us to love. Today, let's do our best to only allow good things out of our mouths, and to show love and kindness and goodness to all around us. As we do that, we'll increase our sin resistance overall. :)

James 2:12-13 -- On The Law of Liberty

"So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment."
James 2:12-13

I wonder here if the law of liberty and the idea of restitution in the scriptures are the same thing. It seems so here, because it is talking about us being judged based on how we treat others. If we show mercy, we will be shown mercy, and if we have not shown mercy, we shall not be shown mercy... so how we use our liberty/free agency affects our own judgement.

I love this idea, because it is perfect, individualized justice... we all get exactly what we deserve. It is also super scary, thinking back on the petty cruelty and emotional outbursts of life. It makes me very thankful for the atonement of Christ, which is the only thing that can save us from our own stupidity, by allowing us to repent of the harm that we have caused and to live and love better.

Today, let's work on using our liberty to show mercy and love for others, and live in hope and faith that Christ will not only offer all of us justice, but mercy through his atonement and because of his great love for us.

James 1:23-25 -- On Forgetting Ourselves

"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."
James 1:23-25

This is an interesting analogy, comparing doing the will of God with knowing ourselves. I feel the truth of it when I remember the difference between sincere and fervent prayer and rote or hurried prayers. Perhaps part of it is sincerity and true, heartfelt belief, but those things are also part of who we are, of knowing ourselves.

When we take God less seriously and are just going through the motions we can justify it to ourselves because we are busy or tired or whatever else, but while those things might be true, isn't it also true that we are too busy or tired or whatever else to truly live as we believe... to match our souls with our physical selves and do what we believe we should do? That doing is what makes us into our ideal selves... that work, that etching of the truth slowly into our hearts and minds with practice and committment. If we take a day off from God, we take a day off from our selves, settling for less than we could and should be.

That isn't to say that we can become perfect all at once or that we should beat ourselves up when we fall short. Trying to make small, incremental improvements is important so we don't lose heart. But God can and will strengthen us as we try, and perfection, while not yet attainable is always something to keep in mind, so that we remember who we are working to be, and that God isn't asking us to do any of this frivolously or pointlessly. He is helping us learn salvation and joy and become everything we have ever wanted to be.

Today, let's remember who we are, and that we are children of God, with infinite potential. Let's work to do as God asks and walk his path, not just because it's a theoretically good path, but because it leads to everything we want, and because it is where we truly want to go. Let's connect our love of God and our desire for joy and peace together, and apply all of that to the little decisions we make each day. Let's try to do small things for God, and as we do, we'll slowly become stronger and more faithful and able to do greater things and to feel more of the Spirit, and to feel and see God's hand in our lives more strongly.

Ether 12:11 -- On Gifts and Faith and a Better Way

"Wherefore, by faith was the law of Moses given. But in the gift of his Son hath God prepared a more excellent way; and it is by faith that it hath been fulfilled."
Ether 12:11

In verse 8, before this, the propher Ether refers to "the heavenly gift" which Christ prepares a way for us to partake, and here we're told that Christ *is* a gift, given to us by the father, also to prepare a "more excellent" way. As always, the father and the son working hand in hand to prepare the way for us, and Christ's atonement is the gift that leads us to, and is, our salvation.

It's the same thing that we consider during the sacrament each week at church, but I'm not sure if we always realize or "retain in remembrance" (Mosiah 4:11) just how amazing God's gifts are, and the possibilities that we have because God loves us enough to give us such incomparable gifts.

Today, let's seek the more excellent way that God has prepared for us, and be thankful to and open with God as we pray, study, and learn to follow his path to eternal joy.

Mark 3:35 -- On Being God's Family

"For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother."
Mark 3:35

This is an interesting passage, with this verse being the point I think ... that being united in the gospel is becoming God's family. I think that is a huge, joyful, blessing especially for people who might have strained family relationships in this life.

I don't think that it means that family isn't important outside the gospel, or that we have to choose between the two. There are cases where breaking ties might be necessary, but typically our families can be huge blessings and often are a source of great joy, and of great learning as we work on those relationships that are less ephemeral than other types seem to be.

Still, the idea of being children of God, of being part of Christ's family, that's something far more valuable than any other relationship, and (as we learn from Lehi's dream), God's love is the goal, and surpasses everything else. Today, let's learn more of God and what it means to be his family. As we do, we will tap into the deepest type of joy and love that it is possible to experience.

Romans 8:35-37 -- On the Love of Christ

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
Romans 8:35-37

I like this explanation that we can never be separated from God's love. Jesus Christ suffered and died for us, and no one can know us better, or love us better, than he can. His love is central to everything, and the core of worship as well. Today, let's pray and reach out to God, to learn from him and to feel his love for us, which is a true source of joy. :)

Jarom 1:11-12 -- On Reaching Our Hearts

"Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them.
And it came to pass that by so doing they kept them from being destroyed upon the face of the land; for they did prick their hearts with the word, continually stirring them up unto repentance."
Jarom 1:11-12

The idea of pricking the heart... which sounds painful, but which is of course symbolic, is an important one here I think because it is so easy to remove our hearts from the equation and distance ourselves from the gospel, thinking about it as a great plan, but not feeling it. The prophets, priests, and teachers were intentionally trying for that emotional reaction, because that is where they were connecting with the Spirit and not only teaching the mind, but awakening the heart.

Today, let's not only read of the love of God, but apply it to our lives and feel it. Let's let the truth of the gospel into our innermost selves, living and breathing and feeling the gospel, not just thinking it. God is here, asking to be let in. Let's open our hearts and allow him to reach us, and reach out to him in turn, not just intellectually but spiritually and emotionally as well, taking action in our lives and feeling his love as we reach out in prayer.

D&C 14:9 -- On Light that Cannot be Hidden

"Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who created the heavens and the earth, a light which cannot be hid in darkness;"
Doctrine and Covenants 14:9

This is kind of like the idea that the good will overcome the evil in time, because if the light can't be hidden, the dark can never smother it, and there will always be that light to help us and guide us. We can never lose our way if we look to Christ and his light.

Today, let's remember that, even when we are afraid of the darkness or wondering where the good is. Let's turn to God and make Christ our light as we go forth. Let's focus on that good, and spread that light as far and as wide as we can, driving back the darkness and doing good with his help and in his strength.

Doctrine and Covenants 8:10 -- On Faith and Good

"Remember that without faith you can do nothing; therefore ask in faith. Trifle not with these things; do not ask for that which you ought not."
Doctrine and Covenants 8:10

Faith is interesting... it's sort of like living the principles that you believe gives you power, except that of course the actual power comes from God, so it doesn't work unless your belief matches the truth of God. Which is actually cool, because any kind of power can be super scary when it is being used for something besides good.

Today, let's throw ourselves into goodness and faith in God. Let's trust that he will help us as we strive to make the world better and to be better people. As we believe that and trust God, acting on those beliefs and living as though we were already those better people, we will start becoming them, and a better world will grow up around us, more and more as we gather and work together with God on bringing joy and doing good.

Alma 12:26-27 -- On a Preparatory State

"And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life they would have been forever miserable, having no preparatory state; and thus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect.
But behold, it was not so; but it was appointed unto men that they must die; and after death, they must come to judgment, even that same judgment of which we have spoken, which is the end."
Alma 12:26-27

I like the explanation here, letting us know that a preparatory state was important and necessary to our happiness. We needed (and still need) a chance to come to earth to learn, and grow, and improve ourselves before facing immortality. God grants us the chance to achieve eternal happiness rather than eternal misery, and that is what life is for... to learn happiness and to find a better state of being through Christ, and with his help.

Today, let's take advantage of this opportunity to learn happiness. Let's improve ourselves, focus on the good, and learn to do more good and expand the good around us, lifting and helping others and doing God's will. As we do, we will become happier as a byproduct because God's plan is the plan of happiness, and that is what all of this is meant to teach, as in Mormon 9:14 "he that is happy shall be happy still; and he that is unhappy shall be unhappy still" ... let's open ourselves up to God so that he can teach us to find the happiness. :)

Jacob 5:66 -- On Clearing Room For Good

"For it grieveth me that I should lose the trees of my vineyard; wherefore ye shall clear away the bad according as the good shall grow, that the root and the top may be equal in strength, until the good shall overcome the bad, and the bad be hewn down and cast into the fire, that they cumber not the ground of my vineyard; and thus will I sweep away the bad out of my vineyard."
Jacob 5:66

I like this idea of balance and keeping the trees alive from the allegory of the tame and wild olive trees, especially the idea that the Lord will make room for the good. He clears space for us as we learn to plant seeds of Good and He always gives us as much room as we need to expand those things and develop more and more Good.

God is out there... closer than we think, ready for us to take action, and ready to help us succeed and thrive. That doesn't mean that there won't be setbacks or hardships or that we won't have to work for it, because that's part of the normal trials of life, but I think part of the message here is what we can read in the parable of the talents. God is giving us the space to at least double whatever effort we are putting in. The only way we can lose is by doing nothing, and trying nothing to make the world better. As soom as we try, he is ready to help. Today, let's try. Let's work with God and make the effort. It might not work at first, and it might take effort and patience and persistence, but as we trust God, He will multiply and magnify our efforts, and in the end if we don't give up, we will see great success from our labors.
