John 14:2-3 -- On Many Mansions

"In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
John 14:2-3

I like the comforting idea that Christ is preparing a place for us. Since he loves us so much that he was willing to die for us, I think that means he will prepare it with love and care, and it will be a good place.

The idea of "many mansions" has been explained as different kingdoms of glory, which already tells us that we'll be someplace we feel comfortable, but it also carries the ideas of spacious, well-furnished, comfortable, safe... a place where you can do things and hang out with people you love. We don't know a lot about what heaven will be like, but we know that much... that we can be with our families, and that sociality exists there as well, so presumably friends as well.

Today, as we deal with the immediacies of life, let's also remember the long-term goal of getting back to God, and being reunited and together with people that we care about in heaven. Let's not give that up for anything in the now, but rather have patience and work for something much, much better, with God's help.
