"Now I would that ye should understand that the word of God was liberal unto all, that none were deprived of the privilege of assembling themselves together to hear the word of God.
Nevertheless the children of God were commanded that they should gather themselves together oft, and join in fasting and mighty prayer in behalf of the welfare of the souls of those who knew not God."
Alma 6:5-6
What struck me today about this is that the people were fasting and praying not for the physically poor, but the spiritually poor. And although the physically poor are definitely people that we should help (even if we are poor ourselves, the idea is to share all we have with others), the verse makes an excellent point that those who know not God are people that are also definitely in need of our prayers and efforts on their behalf.
Today, let's work to help the people around us with whatever they are in need of, physically or spiritually. Let's work on not just giving handouts, but true friendship, and sharing the things that will help us all be united in finding salvation and happiness as a community of saints.
