Psalms 58:4-5 -- On Snakes and Charmers and Hearing God with our Hearts

"Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear; Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely."
Psalms 58:4-5

This was an interesting one to me today, talking about the wicked that speak lies. Comparing to snakes I was thinking about what it would mean to be a deaf adder.

Wikipedia tells me that snakes are able to sense sound, but not actually hear the music, so the movement is what they follow which is interesting, but I think the point here is that even a snake, which is symbolic of evil perhaps here, and definitely other places in scripture, will allow itself to be lulled or entranced for a time, not attacking, but by comparison the wicked just stay evil all the time, and don't even soften that much.

So perhaps the lesson to us is that we shouldn't be deaf to the Lord's music. Instead of being deaf and wicked (and snakes), we should choose to listen, choose to act righteously and uprightly, and match our hearts to those actions rather than hiding evil in our hearts. Today, let's turn to the Lord and hear his voice. Even if we do have evil in our hearts, let's hear his voice and allow him to teach us how to let it go.
