"Thus they were prepared, yea, a body of their strongest men, with their swords and their slings, to smite down all who should attempt to come into their place of security by the place of entrance; and thus were they prepared to defend themselves against the Lamanites."
Alma 49:20
This of course is about physical defenses, but it got me thinking that we should be just as prepared with spiritual defenses. Here, Moroni plans defenses because he knows that the Lamanites are going to come and attack... and we know, similarly, that Satan is going to play on our weaknesses. Sometimes he will try to discourage us, sometimes encourage pride and overconfidence, but however he attacks, we know he is coming.
So what can we do to be like Moroni and plan to defend ourselves? I think the answers are the same as they were in Lehi's dream... when we are in dark and dreary wilderness, pray. When we are being torn off course, hold to the word of God by reading the scriptures and studying the words of the prophets.
Prayer and study were important to Moroni too, and his physical successes were enhanced and enabled by his spiritual strength. Today, let's learn from his example and make our defenses strong.
