"And now I, Nephi, being a man large in stature, and also having received much strength of the Lord, therefore I did seize upon the servant of Laban, and held him, that he should not flee.
And it came to pass that I spake with him, that if he would hearken unto my words, as the Lord liveth, and as I live, even so that if he would hearken unto our words, we would spare his life.
And I spake unto him, even with an oath, that he need not fear; that he should be a free man like unto us if he would go down in the wilderness with us."
1 Nephi 4:31-33
If this were a movie, Zoram would definitely die here. I like that he doesn't, and that Nephi turns it into something positive, making him equal with them and trusting that he would keep his word to stay with them. With our perspective, reading back, it is clear that God arranged this and wanted Zoram to go to the promised land as well, but in that moment, having to make a choice to leave his whole life behind... I'm guessing that he was thankful for his life, but I'm sure it was difficult for him for quite a while, if not most of his life.
Today, let's take courage even when our lives twist in ways that we could never have expected. God knows what he is doing, and whatever ways our lives go, God has something in mind for us, and he is helping us to grow and change and find our way back to him. Let's trust, and pray, and dedicate ourselves to his path, even when it leads us to hard choices and places we never dreamed.
