Mosiah 3:10-12 -- On Honoring the Atonement

"And he shall rise the third day from the dead; and behold, he standeth to judge the world; and behold, all these things are done that a righteous judgment might come upon the children of men.
For behold, and also his blood atoneth for the sins of those who have fallen by the transgression of Adam, who have died not knowing the will of God concerning them, or who have ignorantly sinned.
But wo, wo unto him who knoweth that he rebelleth against God! For salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ."
Mosiah 3:10-12

I really like this brief explanation of Christ's atonement, showing what Christ helps us with and what we need to do on our part if we intentionally rebel. The whole idea of a way to satisfy justice, but also offer mercy is an amazing one, and it seems to go along with the idea of God as our Father in Heaven really well, because parents are a good mortal model of the kind of sacrifice this is. Kids can't handle the full measure of justice for the mistakes they make sometimes, and so parents cover for them, paying the price so that they have the time to grow up and learn better. So God does for us... giving us time, and opportunities for learning how to grow into our eternal potential.

Today, let's honor our heavenly parentage and work towards being better than we are, little by little, at whatever pace we can sustain. God loves us, and as we go to him and inquire of him, he will help us grow and change and learn who we are and what our mission is. :)
