"And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."
Luke 12:15
This is a good reminder of what to avoid, and then later in this chapter Christ mentions being "rich toward God" rather than laying up earthly treasures for ourselves, which offers us an alternative direction. That idea of being rich in a different way I think refers to having the Spirit with us, and having that constant connection / communication with God, so that he can guide us. It's that state of being that makes us rich, whereas worldly riches, and really all else worldly, can just distract us from what is really important, which is being open and receptive to the Spirit and the constant love, instruction, and guidance that comes from God.
That doesn't mean that we should dump our lives in the dust and leave our families to fend for themselves, but perhaps today we can re-prioritize a little, so that even as we take care of our worldly responsibilities, we are still putting God first and allowing him to influence and change our actions where needed. Let's be open to those promptings to do things for others, to show love, and to do God's will in all things.
