Helaman 4:13 -- On Strength

"And because of this their great wickedness, and their boastings in their own strength, they were left in their own strength; therefore they did not prosper, but were afflicted and smitten, and driven before the Lamanites, until they had lost possession of almost all their lands."
Helaman 4:13

It is an interesting idea here that the punishment for boasting in our own strength is being left in our own strength, and maybe it is something we should think about. God wants to help, but if we don't invite him in and work with him, he won't force us to accept his help... the thing is though that God's help makes all the difference.

We think of God sometimes as a punisher, and blame him for bad things happening, but as Christ notes in several places, "How oft would I have gatherd you" ... but "ye would not" (Matthew 23:37, 3 Nephi 10:5, etc.) We are what is preventing God from gathering and comforting us.

Today, let's acknowledge God's hand in our lives, and show a little humility, admitting that we need God's help and love to feel whole, and to become the people that we desire to be. As we do, we won't have to rely only on our own strength, because God will assist us with every small step for good that we make, magnifying what we do and making it more effective in our lives and the lives of others.
