"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Philippians 4:8
I like that this tells us about positive things to focus on, and also the fact that the list includes things that can be found almost anywhere... there is good to be found in many places, which in turn enables us to change things up with a new perspective now and then, by shifting our focus and finding the positive.
I don't think that this means God is forbidding us from feeling sad or denying that there are other valid emotions or anything. After all, Jesus wept, right? I think he is just drawing attention to the fact that in most cases we can do something about how we pervieve the world, and if we focus on finding those good things, and thinking about those things, we'll become happier overall.
